Densitometer DEN-1

Densitometers are designed to measure cell suspension turbidity in the following range: 0.3-5.0 McFarland units (0 - 180 × 107 cells/ml).

They allow the measurement of solution turbidity in a wide range (up to 15.0 Mcfarland units).
However, it should be noted that the standard deviation values increase in the process.

The principle of operation is based on the measurement of optical density with digital representation of the results in McFarland units.

DEN-1 Densitometer

Applications

  • Measurement of cell concentration (bacterial, yeast cells) during fermentation process.
  • Determination of microorganism sensitivity to antibiotics.
  • Microorganism identification using various test-systems.
  • Measurement of absorption at the definite wavelength.
  • Quantitative estimation of concentration of colour solution, absorbing green light.

The operation principle is based on measurement of optical density with digital presentation of  results in McFarland units.
The unit is calibrated at the factory (for operation with 16 mm diameter glass tubes) and keeps calibration without power supply.
However, if necessary it is possible to calibrate the unit by 2–6 points in 0.0–6.0 McFarland unit range.

We recommend to use Biosan standards to ensure full reliability.
It is acceptable to use other commercial as well as self prepared standards (e.g. BaSO4). Possibility to restore factory calibration settings.

Can I use tubes with different diameters?
Yes. Glass and transparent plastic tubes (12 (DEN-1B only), 16 or 18 mm outer diameter) can be used to work with DEN densitometers. A-12 (optional), A-16 adapters (included) must be used to work with 12 mm, 16 mm outer diameter tubes.

Notice. The unit must be calibrated each time a tube type is changed (e.g. with different outer diameter, different bottom shape or different material).

Can standards produced in the laboratory be used for calibration?
Yes, both commercial standards and laboratory-produced standards can be used for calibration.

For what type of tubes is DEN-1/DEN-1B pre-calibrated at the factory?
Since December 2015, factory calibration is available for working with glass tubes with an outer diameter of 16 mm.

How is DEN-1/DEN-1B calibrated?
The calibration procedure is described in the user manual on p.3.4. See the user manual.

How to restore factory calibration?
The procedure to restore the factory calibration settings is described in the user manual p.3.5. See user manual.
